I think I might be ill
I walk out of both Hobby Lobby and Michael’s today with NOTHING! That just never happens! LOL

I did however find two black t-shirts at Kohl’s for my next project. I’m going to make my sister and I “Big Sister” and “Little Sister” t-shirts for her next infusion appointment. I’m super excited to use the Holographic Heat Transfer vinyl that I won last year from a “comment for a chance to win” post here on the site!

Day 25 Feeling relieved and excited this morning — my mobile app finally updated! Support reached out and resolved the Android issue that was blocking updates. If you were stuck like I was, you can now open the Play Store, search for the app, or go to Manage Apps & Device from your profile picture and update it manually. That option wasn’t showing before, no matter how many times I checked, so I’m glad the back‑and‑forth over the last couple of days paid off.

Now I’m just waiting for them to tackle the Single Line fonts and text‑alignment problems in the PC app — those have been lingering for weeks also.

Going to dive into my morning reading, get a workout in, grab some breakfast, and finish the shirts I started yesterday. Wishing everyone a fabulous Friday!

So today didn’t go to plan at all. Huge storms due to the cyclone near us and the power went out. So really didn’t get much done today. Oh well, there’s always tomorrow right.

Day 25: Winter is back again—snow right outside my house, a cold wind, and freezing temperatures. :snowflake: Spring turned out to be nothing but a mirage. I’m going to try to come up with a project for the final week of the Easter/Spring challenge, but I’m lacking creativity these days and just going through the motions. :see_no_evil:

Day 25: If you’re on the FB Messenger group, you read about my silver glitter HTV nightmare. I tried VLR to save the shirt but the glue residue defeated me and I threw the whole thing away. Changed direction and color schemes and used some HTVRONT tie-dyed vinyl for the first time and I love the look of it, now! I’ll be using this more often, that’s for sure. Highly recommend!

Well, I’m happy you and your family are safe. :hugs::heart:

Oh, I have no idea what issue you faced, but that silver glitter HTV can be so hard to see the cuts! :joy: I’m curious, what happened with your project?

I bought a roll of silver glitter HTV, HTVRONT brand. When I got it, it smelled like fish so I contacted customer support and was told that the glitter vinyl is made with fish scales and just leave it to air out. I wanted a replacement roll but they offered a $2 coupon towards a new roll. That was months ago and it’s been sitting out ever since. I needed this for one word on a shirt. I cut it and the adhesive was pulling off the back but manageable, until I pressed it. That fish smell came back strong as ever. I tried washing the shirt but it still smelled so I tried the VLR to remove it and start over but the adhesive under that word would not come off. In the end, I will not be using any more of that vinyl and it’ll go in the trash and I am now hesitant to replace that roll with the same HTVRONT. 98% of the vinyl I use is their brand and only buy others’ if I need an odd color or pattern. I’ve always had great success with their vinyl, until now.

Today I wanted to share a behind-the-scenes look at the setup for the women’s conference I’m hosting tomorrow
and let me tell you, it’s coming together BEAUTIFULLY :raised_hands:t5:

Every detail has been touched with intention:

:shopping: I created the custom gift bags

:placard: Designed and handled the signage

:microphone: My husband is covering the audiovisual (and doing his thing!)

:cherry_blossom: And my friend transformed the dining area into something truly special

Oh, wow! I’ve never had that issue with mine. I don’t have the roll, but I do have a couple packs of the sheets that have the silver glitter in them. I’ve never noticed a fish smell. :joy: Nor did I know it was made with fish scales! :scream: Thanks for the information. Sorry it didn’t work out for you. But that tie dye vinyl is amazing though!

Edit: @Donna_Burbey, I did some research, and Google seems to think the support tech may have mistranslated “fish scales,” as the HTVRONT Glitter vinyl is eco friendly.

The Cause of the “Fishy” Smell

The unpleasant odor is a known issue with some synthetic polymers and adhesives when they are heated or stored improperly:

  • Amine Compounds: The most common culprit for a “fishy” smell in plastics and adhesives is the presence of amines. These are nitrogen-based organic compounds used during the manufacturing of polyurethane (PU) and certain glues. When these chemicals break down due to heat or aging, they release a distinct, fish-like scent.
  • Manufacturing Residue: Sometimes, the smell comes from protective coatings, manufacturing oils, or adhesives on the vinyl or the heat press itself that are “burning off” during the first few uses.
  • Storage Conditions: In some community discussions, users mentioned that “bad batches” might occur if the vinyl was stored in a warehouse that was too warm, causing the chemical adhesive to begin degrading before it even reached the customer.

Adhesive Issues & “Sticky” Results

You might have been seeing a separation of the glue layer:

  • Glue Migration: In faulty batches, the adhesive can separate from the vinyl film, leaving a sticky residue on the carrier sheet or the fabric while the actual glitter part fails to stick.
  • Heat Settings: Glitter HTV often requires higher pressure and more precise heat than standard vinyl. If it’s too hot, the adhesive can “melt out” and smell stronger; if it’s too cool, it won’t bond.

Why the Support Person Said “Fish Scales”

It is highly probable that the support agent was following a script or using a translation that confused “fish scale finish” (a common industry term for a specific type of silvery, iridescent shimmer) with the actual source material. They may have tried to “justify” the smell by claiming it was a natural byproduct, but HTVRONT products are officially certified as synthetic and eco-friendly.

Recommendation for the Community:

If anyone has a roll that smells like dead fish and won’t stick, it is likely a defective batch. You should request a replacement or refund from the HTVRONT Support Team or the retailer, citing a “chemical odor and adhesive failure.”

I have sheets as well and never had an issue, either.

We mostly use steam iron for clothes but there are some types of fabric that don’t iron well with steam iron. Good thing I have my handy dandi Loklik Mini Heat Press 3
