Designing for the iEngrave Laser machine

I like to use Affinity Designer when I create SVG files to use in paper and vinyl crafts. When adding colors to different layers I try to create them in the colors I’m planning on using for each project.

The other day I created a VERY simple ornament design to use with my iEngrave laser machine but I don’t understand how to color the layers and if I just create an outline or a filled in image. The design I made is super simple and what I have right now I’ll include here. The top layer would have the snowflake cut out to see the color of the base layer.

Any design tips and tricks you have up your sleeves would be greatly appreciated!

Oh also, if I wanted to say cut out a shape and then engrave say that snowflake I used above rather than cutting it how, what is the best way to save a file like that?

I hope this is making sense, because I’m starting to confuse myself! LOL

When you make a project you don’t want it attached each layer you will choose a function so with the snowflake being a cut out you would have that set to cut and the bottom as a cut as well. If you want to cut and engrave you would have the cut layer you want then the engrave in age on it (under it if you want the iEngrave to engrave then cut I have noticed it goes from bottom layer to the top. But each layer is a different function you can choose to have the iEngrave do when selecting make it you would select full for full engraving cut for item you want cut. Line just does the outlines fill makes more solid lines engraving more of what you would see. But remember you want the items on top of each other for it to be placed where you want but not attached.

Thanks for this explanation Judi! I’m excited to start trying to design my own projects!
