IdeaStudio & LOKLiK App Update Log | Issue #4 (Version 3.0.0)

Hi everyone  I noticed a few people were unsure where to find Check for Updates in IdeaStudio v3.0.0, so I made a short step-by-step video showing, how to check your current version, where the update button lives, how to run the update, and a quick look at what’s new.
Here’s the post + video: How to Update IdeaStudio to v3.0.0 on PC (Video Tutorial)
Hope it helps, and thanks to the mods for jumping in and helping everyone with the rollout!

If you select your shape and then go to the design tab, you will find width and height measurements there

Because LOKLiK Idea Studio changed so much with version 3.0 I made a new Beginners guide. Hopefully it helps all the newbie crafters here and also the pros that can’t find that setting they need anymore.

Hi Samantha,
I wanted to make a wrap with the graphic for tube tissues. I converted it to an svg and printed it on A4 label paper. I then just stuck it to the tube.
I will try your suggestion and will let you know. I’m also trying to figure out how to use sublimation paper in an injet not the special overpriced printers they say you need. I’m always looking for work arounds as I’m an artist on a budget.

Hi, Nancy! That sounds great! Just a tip I learned about file types: if you’re going to cut it, use SVG—you can remember this by associating the S with scissors. If you’re going to print, use PNG, and associate the P with print.

As for sublimation with an inkjet, did you convert your inkjet printer to do sublimation? If so, it should work just fine. We have many here who have done that. :grinning::+1:

Now you have my attention…convert my inkjet to do sublimation…Do you have a link for that?

Well, it has to be a brand new printer, or you’ll need to clean it out very well with a cleaning solution kit. However, it can be difficult to get it clean enough to do it. They say it’s easier and best to convert a brand new, never used printer. Only some brands and types of printers can be converted, though.

Here’s a video on how to convert a brand new Epson eco-tank inkjet printer.

And here’s one on how to clean a used printer to convert to sublimation.

And here’s a little more information:

Popular & Recommended Brands/Models for Conversion:

Epson EcoTank Series: The most popular choice due to large ink tanks and ease of use with sublimation ink.

ET-2720, ET-2760, ET-2800, ET-2850, ET-3760, ET-4760, ET-15000, ET-8550.

Epson WorkForce Series (Older Models): Good for larger prints but harder to find new.

WF-7710, WF-7720, WF-3640.

Brother: Some models like the MFC-J995DW are listed as convertible.

Key Factors for Conversion:

Print Head Technology: Must be piezoelectric (Epson, Brother) and not thermal (HP, Canon), as thermal heads are ruined by sublimation ink.

Ink System: EcoTanks are ideal because of their refillable tanks; for others, you’ll use refillable cartridges.

Printer Condition: Use a brand-new printer or one that’s thoroughly flushed of regular ink to prevent serious clogs.

Why Not Other Brands?
HP & Canon: Use thermal print heads, which are incompatible with sublimation inks.

Hey, if you are money conscious though. I have a video how I converted the cheapest Epson Ecotank printer you can buy.

Also, just a word of warning. After you convert the printer to sublimation you do void your warranty. Any customer support won’t help you either as you are not using the printer in the intended way. Just keep that in mind. I’ve had mine though for a year set up, I have had one clog, but my printer purge files cleaned it up quick and haven’t had any other dramas. I do recommend doing this conversion process with a brand-new printer.

Thanks, Belle, I’d forgot to mention that.
Just to clarify though, while the ‘Subtract Crossover’ option does work when used on the font itself, the problem persists when using any of the Boolean functions in combination with another shape, as I most often do. This workaround adds another step in my workflow, but at least it does actually work.

I haven’t encountered that behaviour in Affinity, though I’m still using V2, as the new software for iPad is delayed.

Re: Warp function, if you select only the item in the warp group with your other item, as shown in my screenshot, you can then perform Combine functions.

I noticed in the new Affinity that I have, the cursive texts have the slits in them just like the IS, and when I bring Canva designs over, that have cursive fonts, I also have to subtract the crossover. The crossover mainly happens with cursive text, but apparently, it effects all fonts in the IS, even though you may not see the slits, as I was able to get the warp tool to work by Subtracting at Crossover, before warping, and then using the Combine tools. It doesn’t work if I don’t subtract the crossover, even with text that doesn’t appear to have any of those slits, like in your 5 or cursive fonts. However, sometimes it appears to only cut out parts of the word, but if I select the contour view, I can see that it cut out the whole word. If I have warped an element, it won’t allow me to use the slice. So, I will warp it, then duplicate it, the use subtract instead. This is in the PC software. The mobile app, when I warp, I have to subtract crossover, before warping, then, it will only allow me to use slice. Totally opposite of the PC version. Well, I guess it all depends on which warp I use, because now it’s not letting me even use the slice, even though I just did so.

I also noticed that, sometimes, I can use a particular function, but then it just refuses to, but the next day I can try the same action, using the same elements, and it will work just fine. :woman_shrugging:t3: And the undo button just keeps irritating me! :joy: I don’t know what its problem is, but if it doesn’t get its ish together… :rage:
