My father asked me if I could make some kind of sticker to personalize his laptop to cover the brand badge, HP. I don’t really know why, he just wanted to hide it haha. Before that, he’d covered it with an Apple sticker, which makes it even funnier. He doesn’t particularly love one brand or dislike the other, so don’t ask me, these are just his things haha.
When I asked him what he wanted instead, he didn’t give me many clues, but at some point he mentioned using his initials. That made me think it could be nice to design something more special, something that wouldn’t only work for this laptop but could also be used later as a kind of personal signature. So I designed a monogram from scratch, trying to adapt it to the person and initials, and to a more masculine feeling.
For this project, I would have loved to use a holographic permanent vinyl, one of the blue ones from Loklik that I absolutely love and that would have been perfect for this blue laptop. But since that wasn’t possible and I still have many new adhesive vinyls, I chose the best option among them. A light grey vinyl to cover the original logo and a silver one for the monogram itself.
Best part is that when I get that holographic vinyl I could change it and we can use the monogram for things like tests with the 3D printer.
I made a first version and made the mistake of applying air heat to improve adhesion. I’m including a photo of the unwanted result, where the texture of the laptop case and the covered logo became too visible, creating a rather unpleasant effect. So I decided to do it again, this time without heat and without too much pressure, just letting the vinyl adhere gently.
The final result feels very subtle and elegant. The simple grey vinyl combined with the silver makes it look like a single embossed piece. It reads clearly at first glance, but really shines when the light hits the silver relief. A small detail, carefully made, that quietly transforms an everyday object.
