INTRODUCTION:
Valentine’s Day is coming up fast, so I put together a fun tutorial showing how I made a cute Valentine’s T‑shirt for my daughter using a mix of glitter HTV and puff HTV. You’ll pick up some helpful tips for getting that perfect puff effect on your design. Follow along step by step and you’ll be thrilled with how your shirt turns out.
MATERIALS USED:
- HTVRONT Black Glitter HTV
- HTVRONT Red Puff HTV
- 100% Cotton T-Shirt
- Lint roller
- Teflon Sheet
- Butcher Paper
- Heat resistant tape
- Heat tape dispenser
- Thicker and firm pressing mat
- T-shirt guide ruler (optional)
MACHINE USED:
- Laptop
- Cutting Machine
- HTVRONT Auto heat press 2
HEAT SETTINGS:
- HTVRONT Glitter HTV - 320 F, 15 seconds,170 pounds of pressure (COLD PEEL)
- HTVRONT Puff HTV - 280 F, 10 seconds,170 pounds of pressure (HOT PEEL)
NOTES:
- Designs I used here were from IS Library.
- Pre‑wash your T‑shirt before heat pressing.
- DO NOT wash your T‑shirt for at least 24 hours after pressing to ensure the vinyl adheres properly.
STEP 1 - Prepare and cut your design from IdeaStudio App.
- Open IdeaStudio and on your canvas, click the Library tab on the left. In the “Images” section, type in any keyword you’d like. For this tutorial, I searched for “hugs & kisses” by Jordyn Griffin—a cute Valentine‑themed design that I thought would be perfect for my daughter’s shirt. Once you find the design you want, add it to your canvas.
- Then I felt the design needed a little something extra, so I searched the library for a heart design and added it to the canvas.
- Resize the heart and place it exactly where you want it on your design. Adjust the color, then select “Unite” under the “Combine” menu, as shown below:
- With the image still selected, click the Offset button and create your offset layer by clicking the “Apply” button.
- Then, select the two layers and click the “Slice” feature under the “Combine” menu.
- Finally, send all the layers to your cutting machine by clicking the “Make” button. For my project, I used black glitter HTV for the offset and red puff HTV for the main design.
STEP 2 - Weeding the Vinyls.
- After cutting your vinyl, take your time weeding the black glitter HTV. It’s more brittle than other HTV types, so handle it gently—especially when working with intricate designs.
- After you finish weeding, set the design aside and preheat your HTVRONT Auto Heat Press 2 using the recommended glitter HTV settings at 320 F for 15 seconds with 170 pounds of pressure.
STEP 3 - Glitter HTV Application.
- While the press is heating up, lay your T‑shirt flat and run a lint roller over it to remove any dust or stray fibers.
- Once the heat press reaches the correct temperature, pre‑press the T‑shirt for 10 seconds to remove any moisture trapped in the fabric.
- Find the middle and fold the shirt lengthwise and run the heat press for 5 seconds.
- Center your design using a T‑shirt guide ruler or place it about three fingers below the neckline for proper positioning. Grab some heat resistant tapes and secure it in place.
- Once the temperature reached to 320 F, press as directed. NOTES: I skipped adding a Teflon sheet on top of the design because I already have a Teflon cover attached to my heat plate. Glitter HTV is a cold peel.
STEP 4. Puff HTV Application.
- Lower the heat setting for the puff HTV to 280°F and press for 10 seconds, keeping the pressure at 170 pounds.
- Position your puff HTV design inside the glitter HTV outline, making sure everything lines up cleanly. Once aligned, secure it in place with a few pieces of heat-resistant tape.
- Once everything is in place, lay a sheet of butcher paper over the design and press as directed. Puff HTV is a hot peel, so remove the carrier while it’s still warm.
STEP 5. Show it off, enjoy!
Now you’ve got an adorable Valentine’s T‑shirt with the perfect quote for a young teen. I’m so excited to give this to my daughter on Valentine’s Day!
TIPS & TRICKS:
-
Always test your materials and heat settings before committing to the final press so you don’t waste both “good” t-shirt and vinyl. High pressure is essential for getting puff HTV to rise properly, as long as the temperature and time are dialed in.
-
Using a firm—or even firmer—pressing mat also helps you achieve consistent pressure. The goal is a smooth finish with a clean, visible puff. These were my best results after experimenting with different time and temperature combinations.
