What Are the Best Beginner Projects for LOKLiK Cutting Machines?

Hi everyone,

I’m new to using LOKLiK machines and recently joined this community. I’m really excited to start creating, but as a beginner, I’m not sure where to begin.

I’ve seen that LOKLiK is designed for DIY crafts like stickers, custom t-shirts, and personalized items , so I wanted to ask:

  • What are some easy starter projects for beginners?
  • Which materials are best to practice with (vinyl, paper, fabric, etc.)?
  • Any tips to avoid common mistakes while cutting or designing?

I’d really appreciate if you could share your experiences, project ideas, or even beginner-friendly settings.

Looking forward to learning from this amazing community!

Hi @infoshahbaz87! Welcome to the community! We’re so happy you’ve joined us!

I have a series you may be interested in here:

Part 2: 10+ Advanced Things to Know When Starting with the Loklik Cutting Machine 2

Part 3: Glossary of Terms for the Loklik Cutting Machine 2

I think these may answer many of your questions.

As for beginner projects, we have lots of projects in the Inspiration section of the community, or you can find them under Projects in the IdeaStudio software/app library. I have a YouTube channel where I have several beginner friendly projects that I put together.

@BellethehowtoGuru also has a channel with some great beginner friendly projects you may want to check out as well.

For the settings, the iCraft pretty much has all the settings needed for specific materials set as default. They’re most accurate when using Loklik or HTVRONT branded materials, but I’ve found them to be pretty accurate for the Other materials, as well. For practicing, I’d say you would need to practice on whatever material you wish to be using, as each material is different. Just be sure to do test cuts before adding a full 11x11 inch design to your task list and then trying to make it. It will save material and your sanity.

We have weekly challenges in which you can win some awesome prizes — materials & gift cards — that you may be interested in joining. Right now we’re in the final week of the :art: #Color-Craft Challenge is Live! Create with Color & Win up to $100!. You can find some wonderful projects there from which you may find some inspiration. Just be sure to use all Loklik assets — IdeaStudio library images, fonts, shapes, etc., if you decide to enter. You can learn how to enter here: How to Enter Community Events.

You may also be interested in our cheers rewards program. You can earn cheers by doing certain tasks, like making posts, sharing projects, liking and commenting on other’s posts. You can learn more about that here: Mini Awards Store | A New Way to Celebrate Creativity and Engagement.

And right now, newcomers can earn double cheers points. You can learn more about that here: April Newcomer Double Cheers | Start Faster, Get Rewarded Faster.

I hope you enjoy the community. If you have any questions, never hesitate to ask. We’re always happy to help. Happy crafting!

Welcome to the Comunity! I started with paper my first cutting machine project I made a tractor so used different colors and change the mats. If I was starting now I think I would recommend trying one of each type do something with paper noting crazy but an image you can put on a card or something. Then try some vinyl it can be frustrating vinyl can stick to its self easily so it can be frustrating but it’s worth it. Then when trying htv mirroring is something to get used to it’s always something fun to do though.

Thanks for the shout out @Samantha_Bryant. Your post is very informative but I also wanted to give my advice for a new beginner.

Big welcome to the community @infoshahbaz87

If you’ve just unboxed your LOKLiK iCraft (Cutting Machine 2) or you’re still staring at the box wondering where to even begin — you’re not alone. So many crafters tell me they feel overwhelmed by all the choices, tools, materials, and project ideas. It’s completely normal.

But here’s the good news: you don’t need to learn everything before you start. You just need one small, simple first step.

:movie_camera: Start With the Basics

If you haven’t already, my Cutting Machine Craft Basics video is the perfect place to begin. It walks you through the essentials in a calm, beginner‑friendly way so you can get comfortable with the different types of materials and learn some of the craft terminology that you will hear throughout your crafting journey.

:dart: Pick ONE First Project

This is the part most beginners skip — and it’s why they get stuck.

Instead of trying to learn every feature or scrolling endlessly for inspiration, choose one small, practical project to start with. Something like:

  • Labels for your Tupperware
  • Pantry stickers
  • A simple name decal
  • A basic vinyl design for a notebook

Once you’ve picked your first project, research only what you need for that one thing. Suddenly the learning curve becomes a straight line instead of a mountain.

:bulb: Why This Works

When you have a clear goal:

  • You know exactly what tutorials to watch
  • You learn the tools and settings that actually matter
  • You build confidence faster
  • You avoid the “too many choices” overwhelm
  • And most importantly — it becomes fun instead of stressful

Crafting should feel exciting, not intimidating. Starting with a single project gives you direction, momentum, and that satisfying “I made this!” moment that keeps you going.

:rainbow: Final Thoughts

Don’t pressure yourself to master everything at once. Take your machine out of the box, plug it in, watch some of the tutorials @Samantha_Bryant listed, pick a simple project, and just start experimenting. Every crafter you admire began exactly where you are now — one small project at a time.

If you ever feel stuck or unsure, you’re always welcome to ask questions. You’ve got this, and I’m cheering you on every step of the way.
