I wanted to share something a little more personal with this community. I have been absent from the community for the past week as I have been grieving the loss of my father. The recent passing of my father has given me pause and space to reflect—not only on grief, but on the powerful role creativity can play in honoring and celebrating the lives of those we love.
As makers, we have the unique ability to turn memories into tangible keepsakes. Crafting memorial pieces can be deeply meaningful, not only as a tribute to someone special, but also as a therapeutic and healing experience for those left behind.
Here are some thoughtful project ideas our LOKLiK/HTVRONT community could create to celebrate loved ones:
Memorial Shadow Boxes
Layered shadow boxes are beautiful ways to tell a life story. These can include:
- Favorite photos
- Meaningful quotes or scripture
- Symbols of hobbies (fishing lures, music notes, military insignia, tools, flowers)
- Layered cardstock elements that create depth and dimension
- Names, dates, or a short message in vinyl or sublimation
I personally plan to create a memorial shadow box for my mother. I’ll be working closely with my mom and my sister to carefully select the most meaningful photos of my father. Including them in the process feels important—it allows us to share stories, laugh, cry, and remember together while choosing images that truly reflect who he was.
Sublimated Aluminum Photo Panels
Aluminum panels are perfect for vibrant, lasting memorial displays.
- Choose high-resolution images (at least 300 DPI).
- Lightly enhance brightness and contrast to compensate for sublimation’s slight softening.
- Consider adding a subtle overlay of a favorite quote or handwritten signature.
These panels are durable, sleek, and timeless—perfect for displaying in a home.
Memorial Drinkware
Custom mugs or tumblers featuring:
- A favorite saying
- A photo collage
- A handwritten recipe
- “In Loving Memory” designs
These everyday-use items can feel comforting—like having a small reminder present during quiet morning moments.
Memorial Ornaments
Holiday seasons can be especially tender. Creating ornaments with:
- Names and dates
- A favorite phrase
- Angel wings, cardinals, or symbolic imagery
These can become annual traditions that keep memories present in a gentle way.
Fabric & Textile Keepsakes
- Memory pillows made from clothing
- Sublimated handkerchiefs
- Custom tote bags with meaningful images
Tips & Best Practices
- Keep designs timeless. Soft neutrals and classic fonts often age better than trendy styles.
- Less is more. Avoid overcrowding. Let the photo or message breathe.
- Test print first. Especially with sublimation, always run a sample if possible.
- Include personal touches. Handwritten notes, signatures, or scanned recipe cards add authenticity.
- Use quality materials. Memorial pieces are meant to last.
The Therapeutic Power of Creating Together
One of the most meaningful aspects of memorial crafting is involving others. Invite family members to:
- Help choose photos
- Suggest quotes
- Share stories while designing
- Assemble layers together
Grief can feel isolating. Creating together opens space for conversation, remembrance, and connection. It transforms sorrow into something tangible and beautiful. The act of making becomes part of the healing process.
As I begin working on my father’s memorial shadow box with my mother and sister, I know it won’t just be about the finished piece. It will be about the stories we tell while selecting photos, the memories that surface, and the quiet comfort of honoring him together.
If you’ve created memorial pieces before, I’d love to hear what you made and how the process impacted you. And if you’re considering making something for someone you’ve lost, know that your creativity has the power to preserve love in ways words sometimes cannot.
Sending love to anyone walking through loss.
