Christmas is over and all the decorations are down. My house was looking boring and empty. So, I thought let’s decorate for Valentines Day.
Materials needed
Wooden or solid blank
Adhesive vinyl
Transfer Tape
Weeder
Brayer
Green Cutting Mat
Scraper
Cutting machine
Ruler
Scissors
The fonts I used to make my decal are:
I love Glitter
Valent
You can find both of these from Creative Fabrica
Step 1: Create our design
So, after we downloaded our font and installed it we need to make our design. I used Loklik Idea Studio 2.0 but you could use any design software and follow along with what I will do.
So first we are going to make 2 text boxes. Write in the first text box Hello and the second one let’s write valentine. I’m using different fonts for each. So, let’s change the font now. For Hello we are going to change it to Valent. For Valentine I’m going to use I love glitter font. Using different fonts through out a design can enhance the design.
Now let’s make a little decal to go in between the hello and valentine. I going to use the shape tool to make a love heart. Size it and place it in between the fonts and centre it. Now let’s duplicate the heart shape and put it on an angle. Move it to the right side of the heart. Let’s duplicate the angled heart shape and then flip horizontal and move it to the other side of the middle heart.
Now we are going to make some lines for either side of the heart shapes. Using the pattern tool, we can select the rectangle and shape it to the height and length I want. We can then duplicate the line to mirror it for the other side.
Now we just need to size our design to fit our blank and make sure it’s all centred.
Step 2: Let’s cut
Let’s cut out our design now. Getting our first colour ready we are going to place our purple vinyl on the mat. Make sure to line up your vinyl to the corner of the mat. Now make sure you brayer your vinyl to the mat, so it adheres nicely. Now let’s load our mat into our machine and then press start to start cutting. After the cut is complete unload your mat from the machine. Now flip the mat upside and start peeling the vinyl off the mat while rolling the mat away from the vinyl. This helps the vinyl from curling up. Follow this step to cut out the next colour of vinyl.
Step 3: Weeding
Weeding is the process of removing unwanted vinyl from your design. To start get your weeding tool and make a hole in the corner of the vinyl. Slowly peel the excess vinyl away from the backing, moving in a diagonal direction. Don’t forget to weed out the insides of our letters.
Step 4: Apply the transfer tape to your design
Now we need to place the transfer tape on our design so we can easily place it on our blank. To do this let’s choose the cream coloured hearts first. Line up the line with the grid lines on your transfer tape then place the transfer tape down on the design. Burnish with your scraper front and back. Slowing peel the backing off the vinyl in a diagonal direction making sure you go slowly and press anything down that doesn’t stay stuck to the transfer tape. Now we can do the same process to the purple words. Lining up our design, I find it easiest to be over the top of what I’m working on, making sure you look at the sides and top and bottom to align your design. Now place the transfer tape on the purple words. Let’s burnish this front and back, then slowly in a diagonal direction remove the backing from the vinyl.
Step 5: Preparing your blank
When our blank is dirty or has been touched a lot, our vinyl may not stick as well. So I normally just spray a little rubbing alcohol onto the blank surface and wipe with a microfibre cloth. This gets rid of any oily finger print residue or dust on our blank so our vinyl has a chance to stick to the surface and adhere to our blank better.
Step 6: Applying our decal
Now we can finally apply our decal to our blank. Line up your design, and then place your vinyl down on the blank. Use the scrapper tool to burnish the vinyl and make it adhere to your blank. Once adhered slowly remove the transfer tape in a diagonal direction. Monitor your design to make sure nothing get’s missed.
Step 7: Enjoy
Now enjoy your new finished project and pat yourself on the back, for a job well done.
