Daily Mission Challenge: Finished or Unfinished? Let’s Talk Wood Wisdom!

Today’s mission is all about one of the most important choices you’ll make when working with your LOKLiK iEngrave Laser, deciding whether to use finished wood or unfinished wood. Both have their shining moments and both come with things to keep in mind, especially when you want clean cuts, smooth results, and beautiful engravings.

Finished wood is my personal go to for most laser projects because it behaves wonderfully under the beam. The surface is already sealed and smooth which means the laser glides through it beautifully and the edges tend to come out much cleaner. When your cut is done your piece is often ready for assembly without any sanding or staining which saves tremendous time during busy seasons. Finished woods also resist scorching better which helps maintain crisp detail in engraved areas.

Unfinished woods have their own charm. They give you full control to stain, paint, or seal in your own style which can be amazing for custom color palettes or rustic looks. Since they lack a protective coating they may sometimes show more burn marks or require light sanding after engraving. If you enjoy adding your own finish or layering texture this type of wood lets your creativity lead the way. Just take note that certain softer species can char more easily so test cuts are your best friend.

Your challenge today if you have an iEngrave or are thinking of getting one, is to choose a small project idea and decide which type of wood best suits it. Think about your design your timeline and the finish you want in the final result. Ask yourself whether you want the convenience and smooth cutting of finished wood or the total creative freedom of unfinished. Share your preference with the community and let us know why it works for you.

Happy crafting and happy choosing. May today’s projects be smooth beautiful and full of inspiration.
