Animal Print Pet Frame with Passepartout
To go along with this week’s community talk theme, animals! I created a little frame to display an illustration of my mother’s Yorkshire terrier. It’s a shadow box–style frame made of three layers: the outer frame, an inner box to give depth, and a passepartout to highlight the picture.
I used a cute animal paw print asset from the Idea Studio library, featuring soft rounded shapes in different shades from magenta to violet. I turned this into a seamless pattern and printed two versions: one on a light background and one on a darker purple base. These were used to construct the different parts of the frame.
As a personal touch, I added the name of the dog, Rubi, in a calligraphy-style word cut out of cardstock, decorating the front.
This kind of frame needs two A4 sheets: one for the main frame, and another for the inner box and the passepartout. The passepartout not only adds visual interest and holds the photo in place, but the cut-out piece from the center is also used to close the frame from the back by inserting it into tabs built into the frame structure. This makes the frame reusable! Of course, you can also glue the parts permanently if you want a more polished look.
Only four tabs in the frame and four in the box need glue, the rest fits together neatly. Since it’s made of three main components, it’s a fun project to experiment with different materials, colors, or printed patterns.
