DIY Project Sharing | Embossed Card - First attempt - alearning excercise

I saw a video on YouTube on how to make embossed cards with the scoring tool.

I had a go and learnt a few things.
The youtube suggests using medium tack cutting mat, I find that card get damaged with this.

A sacrificial card is used to create the relief, with scoring around the shapes left on the mat.

I flipped the image make it easier to place the card.
The cut on the sacrifical card was not as clean as it should have been, again a learning point.

As a proof of concept I think it was a success but the spacing on the original design meant the scroring lines over lapped losing definition with the rose.

I have ordered the foiling kit.
I think that a combination of this embossing technique and foiling could look good.

So far I am very impressed with the iCraft and how easy it is to use, however I have more learning to do - which is part of the fun.

Interesting. If it helps, original traditional engraving embossing is made wetting the paper and pressing it against a engraved plate (metal, linoleum… ), it helps the paper to emboss deepen gently, so better than cardstock it would be using acetate or similar material to make reusable negative plate

Of course the paper, the better quality, the better result/heigth of the embossand. It need to be waterproof. In traditional engraving embossing, the paper is immersed in a water tank for some minutes and then let to dry a bit, to release excess water. With cardstock, you can wet it with soft spray and same way, let it release excess water.

@Roger_Leitch you may add a picture before the youtube link here in the post (editing this thread, not in the app) so that we all can see the actual project thumbnail here in the Inspire section xdd

how much better @InkiteeWorkshop ? I’m very curious. I know iCraft is supposed to work with thicker materials and can use higher force, that it is more ready to score and has more accesories and housings, but, other than that? To what extent is it better?

I mean…
A: Loklik improved the plotter they’re selling (it is the only version we sell, but now it is improved, that’s why we don´t sell the first anymore).
B: It is a higher gamma and both machines are complementary (I don´t know if I’m making myself clear). Entry and higher gamma

And any other thoughts are welcome. Or in other words… why a crafter owner should upgrade if should?

I understand you, I should have said that I had another brand alltogether, not the crafter, I have only had the iCraft 2.0. it’s better than the machine I had before. The written word can be easily misunderstood. I will do an edit so it is clear

Oh, ok, no problem, it might be me who misunderstood, thank you xddd

I will attempt to update it.

I assumed it took the first photo uploaded as the cover picture.

Yes, exactly, but I’m sure the script here on the web searchs for the first picture that is read in the html and after reading the embeded yotube script, that’s the video thumb.

Which BTW, you unwittingly found a way to skip the url posting restriction you still have with your current community level XDDDDDD

Perhaps it got through because I added the URL in Idea Studio rather than directly in the Forum?

I understand why many forums limit URLs for new accounts.
We have all seen forums spammed to death.

I’ve been so wanting to try this myself. Love the fact you are testing and trying out new things with the machine.

Can’t wait for the tools to be available in my region.

I hope tools are available here too in Philippines

I guess the iCraft is more convenient than the Crafter because there are more presets or setting to choose from and manipulate. You can even put in depth for the thickness of you material. There are also separate setting for foiling, and scoring.

However, if you enjoy doing workarounds I guess some of these things can also be done on the Crafter with playing around with settings and attachments plus using a different software.

I guess the iCraft’s advantage is the thickness of the material it can cut since it can cut up to 2mm (but I haven’t tried this yet)

Very good explanation, quite clarifying. More or less that what I guessed.
Thank you @timmytation !!

What I like about the iCraft is that you can make your own custom material list settings - Force, Speed, and even Depth :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: You can specifically name it based on the Brands of the products and materials used.

The only concern is you cannot put a “space” in between words  that’s why some use a dash to separate words for their Customize Materials List labels.

That’s so amazing! It’s so cute, and the embossing is incredibly neat.

Yes but that’s not something that the Crafter doesn’t have. And the impossibility to use space os not something tha the iCraft lacks. Even the possibility or not of scoring is not something within the Crafter.

It is all about Idea Studio development…

I just noticed that when switching between the 2 machines the cut settings are different when choosing materials. I guess they haven’t applied the same cutting parameters to both machines :woman_shrugging:
