[/wrap] In 2004 when my father passed away, I made one of the most meaningful projects I’ve ever created.
I designed a military shadow box in his honor using a dark oak triangle display case, deep green felt, an American flag, and coins he brought home from Saudi Arabia during his time overseas. I even placed a tiny urn inside with some of his ashes so a part of him would always be with it.
At the time, I didn’t realize I was creating more than a craft project. I was building a memory by hand. Every piece told part of his story and mine.
Sadly, through years of personal trauma and addiction struggles, the shadow box was lost over time. That loss still hurts, but what remains is the pride I felt creating something so personal and meaningful for my father.
This piece reminded me that crafting is more than decorations or supplies. Sometimes it becomes healing, remembrance, and love preserved in wood, fabric, and carefully placed treasures.
Even though I no longer have the shadow box itself, I will always carry the memory of making it and how proud I felt when I finished it.
Maybe not an optical illusion but a brain teaser, for sure. I laser cut this puzzle, made 4 or 5 of them. The first few, I just used plain wood but when I dumped out the pieces to see how hard it was to put back together, there was no telling which side went up or down. I couldn’t do it. So I marked the back side with a small x to give a fighting chance. I decided to dye the face on the others I made just to distinguish what was up and what went down.
