This weekend I had to bake a birthday cake… and when I saw this activity, I thought: well, now I have to make the topper too! So here’s my first ever cake topper — and I’m happy to say the cake + topper combo turned out great!
It was for the 23rd birthday of an aerospace engineering student, so I went with a fun theme mixing space, physics, and math. The message on the topper says:
“a los 23 INDIVISIBLE como acero para naves espaciales ¡EN MI PRIME!”
(at 23, INDIVISIBLE like spacecraft-grade steel. IN MY PRIME!)
It’s a nod to the birthday boy’s favorite joke and a pun on the number 23 being prime — so it was funny and personal.
The design is mounted on a circular “planet” with a starry atmosphere, surrounded by planets and a rocket. I don’t have fancy scrap materials, so I relied on design and creativity: I made my own printed cardstock with custom patterns and used pink tones to match the classic Black Forest strawberry cake. For flat pieces I used print then cut, and for the dimensional parts I added height using foam scraps recycled from old packaging.
I made it all with just my Loklik Crafter, my printer, Tombow Aqua glue, and a wooden stick for assembly. The tiny star pattern gives the word “indivisible” a sparkly look — kind of like glitter, which I would’ve loved to use if I had it!
Simple math: cake +
topper =
one amazing cake
This was my first time making a cake topper, and I had so much fun. It really gave the cake a festive final touch. Thanks Loklik for the push to try something new!
PS: I also tweaked my cake recipe and wow, it turned out incredible!
