Project | Winter Pines Cabin and Lodge Pyrography Sign

Vinyl Stencil, Pencil Trace & Pyrography Finish

For this rustic wood sign, I wanted to capture the cozy charm of a winter lodge. I started by selecting a design from the IdeaStudio library and cutting it out of permanent adhesive vinyl. Using transfer tape, I applied the vinyl to the wooden plaque to create a crisp stencil.

Next, I traced the design with a pencil to mark the outlines, then carefully removed the vinyl. With the guide in place, I used my pyrography machine to “paint” the design directly into the wood, burning in the details of the moose, pine trees, and lettering. The result is a warm, engraved look that feels both handcrafted and professional—perfect for a cabin‑style décor piece.

Materials & Process:

  • Wooden plaque (sign base)
  • IdeaStudio library design
  • Permanent adhesive vinyl (stencil)
  • Transfer tape (application)
  • Pencil (tracing outlines)
  • Pyrography machine (burn the design)

This is such a cool design. What is a pyrography machine? Is that just a wood burner pen thing?

Thank you! I’m happy you think so! Yes, it’s a wood burning pen, but the one I use has wire nibs and a control box, in which I can plug 2 pens and adjust the temperature for each pen, which is great for shading and more intricate details. Whereas the solid tip pen doesn’t have a control box and only has one temperature setting, which isn’t great for more detailed artwork.
