Time for our Tuesday chat!
We all start crafting for different reasons—maybe just for fun, maybe for gifting, or just because our hands can’t stay still lol. But at some point, that hobby turns into something more.
Maybe a friend asked to buy something.
Maybe a random person messaged you on Instagram.
Maybe you joined a holiday market just to try it out.
So tell us—
What sparked your first craft sale?
Was it something you planned, or a happy little surprise?
Whether you’re running a full handmade business or just sell your crafts from time to time, we’d love to hear how it all began. Drop your story in the replies ↓
We’ll randomly pick 3 fun replies from the comments next Tuesday—each will receive 100 points as a little treat.
when I was in grade school I wanted to get some extra cash to buy snacks from the cafeteria, so I made some stationery with some paper and cut outs from in-flight magazines that my father brought home from his trips. I also lined each page with my little wavy ruler plus a little spray of cologne and tada! I sold them to my classmates this was during the 90s and stationery was the IN thing to collect with my peers… years later still making stuff and still selling them
Well my answer won’t be funny but the reason I started crafting was to get rid of my panic attacks as a mom living abroad and recently had my 2nd child on Covid days so I had to do something to help my self and forget about the panic attacks I was having repeatedly
And thanks God it worked
My first craft that turned to a seasonal business was making handmade masks during COVID era. I sewed masks for the whole family and relatives first. Then, my sister-in-laws told me, “why don’t you sell this masks at eBay? Your products are high quality and very fashionable!”. After that, I went to Jo-Ann store and bought elastic bands and fabrics. There was a time that elastic bands are in demand and ran out in the stores, so I hoarded some from Amazon and until now l still have bunch of leftovers. Anyways, so I opened up an account at eBay and sold more or less thousand masks during the COVID and profited about more or less $5K. I didn’t know that time that people love my handmade products so I opened up myself of making things to sell. Nowadays, life gets busier and back to normal, I only sewed or make things when I am able to do so. Mostly, all my handmade creations are for gifting now. Famous masks sample I’ve sold below:
I started making my own shirts that have funny saying on them that tech minded and gaming ppl would get. I was on one of my gaming streams when a follow asked where I got my shirt from, I told her I made it. She said oh you should sell these so we can support you more. So, I did. It’s not a huge amount of sales but it’s always nice getting that order come through. Since then, I have started selling mugs, hats, mouse pads and tote bags. These are pics of my first T-Shirt designs.
I’m not good at sales. I’ve been crafting for as long as I can remember, but I’ve always struggled to turn my designs into something commercial—just a bad salesperson, lol.
However, there’s always been one kind of craft that’s been easier for me to sell at different times in my life. I’m not exactly sure why, but that’s how it’s been.
I’m talking about simple bracelets and anklets made with polymer clay beads and macramé using waxed cotton cord. I always have beads ready and materials on hand so I can be prepared for the warmer season—when we feel more like decorating our skin.
These days, I’m starting to work on improving my sales skills and trying to make something out of doing what I love—it’s almost like a personal growth challenge. I’ve even dared to set up a little stall a few times! xddd
Then after that it continues until today and I was thankful that I can create with my heart and hope that someday I can inspire people like me who started at a younger age with no ones help.
Just pure hardwork:smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
I was making beaded bags before and I don’t even know the techniques and my friend ask me to create one for their Christmas Party Exchange gift And she wants me create a minion. When I created the minions the eyes were not aligned with the body but she still bought it and she also told me that the person got the minion loves it. I did’nt even the picture because I think It’s just a silly request.
Loved reading through everyone’s stories—so many fun and heartfelt moments shared
