Valentine Book Cushion

I love making these book cushions and before getting my Loklik machine I always used to embroider the pocket. It’s great to have the option to do both. Here’s a step by step to making the cushion and applying the transfers and htv to the pocket.

MATERIAL NEED:
Cotton Fabric -
16” (40cm) square for the back
16” x 12” (40cm x 30cm) for the front
16” (40cm) square for the pocket
Heat Transfer Vinyl
T-shirt Transfer for dark fabric
Design software (I used IdeaStudio)
Ink Jet Printer
Heat Press
Sewing Machine

MAKING YOUR CUSHION

Take your front piece and sew a hem along the bottom edge
Put to one side.

Take the fabric you’ve chosen for the pocket and fold in half horizontally (top to bottom) and press. If you wish, you can add wadding or fleece to the inside of the folded fabric to give it more of a soft feel.
Sew two rows of stitching along the folded (top) edge of the pocket.

You are now ready to assemble the cushion.

Place back right side up and, if the fabric has a direction pattern, be aware of which edge will be at the top.
Next place the pocket right side down, then the front piece, again right side down.

Pin everything in place and stitch all around

Turn through to right side and press seams.

You are now ready to choose your design for the pocket.

I went with 2 different techniques -

HTV for the words and Print and Cut for the picture.

T-Shirt Transfer

You can use sublimation, but for those of us that don’t have a sublimation printer, the design doesn’t have to be mirrored (flipped) and is printed on to dark fabric transfer paper.
I chose the stack of valentine books and placed them inside a heart. You can choose your own design and once you’re happy, resize it to 4.5” (10 cm) high and send to the printer.
Place the printer sheet on the light grip mat (Blue) and use the cutting setting for Loklik - Matt Printable Vinyl Sticker Paper.
This will be attached to the pocket using your heat press set at 180C for a max 60 secs.
Always use the sheet supplied or a Teflon sheet to protect your work.

HTV

Making sure to mirror before cutting, I cut each colour separately and positioned them of the pocket in turn, starting with the glitter vinyl, then the remaining (blue) words and finally the decorative hearts.
For the glitter vinyl you need your heat press at 160C for 15 sec.
For the smooth vinyl your settings need to be 150C for 15 sec
Always use your Teflon Protection sheet when pressing.

Hope you like my latest creation and have some fun making something similar for your loved one this Valentine’s.

It only actually took a couple of hours. It used to take much longer when I used to embroider them

It looks very nice. I don’t have such talented fingers. Mine are good at gardening. It has no place on this platform either. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

It will bring great pleasure to the person who will use it.

I have a quick question, when you say sew all around, do you leave a corner free so you can then flip right side out?

There’s no need to as you have an opening hidden between the front and the pocket

I’m pretty sure it will. When making projects for the first time everything seemed long when did but once you get the hang of it all falls into place.
