Cake Topper Tutorial

Project Overview:

As a crafter, we all start our crafting journey at some point and can feel a little lost on how to create what seems simple projects. I hope to help you on your journey with a step-by-step tutorial on how to create a simple and layered cake topper.

Materials:

  • Cutting machine: LOKLiK iCraft
  • Sticky mat: LOKLiK standard grip
  • Cardstock (65lb or equivalent), I used the Michael’s Recollection purple, white, and black paper
  • Template: from LOKLiK Library, “free white circle and black lace SVG file” and the “ribbon banner christmas”
  • Craft glue and hot glue
  • Craft foamies/cubbies
  • Cake topper stick (I used a paper straw to match the color/theme)

Design and Cutting Process:

  • Using the LOKLik IdeaStudio Library, search for the 2 templates and select the + to add the template to the canvas.

Your canvas would like similar to the photo below.

Now it is time to take these simple bases and transform them into a layered cake topper. For this tutorial I will be using purple, white, and black but you are able to use any color combination you would like.

Adding Layers:

  • In order to add layers, we are going to be using the “offset” feature. This feature is a great tool to add dimension and depth to you cake toppers.
  • Click on the “offset” tab and increase the external offset. For this portion, I entered an offset of 5mm.

Before you click apply, increase or decrease the offset amount to find the perfect size of offset you prefer. I prefer the offsets to be noticeable but not to chunky.

**

  • Select the preferred color for your offset using the “fill” button along the top.

By changing the colors as you add shapes and designs, you are able to visualize how your cake topper will look once complete, this step is very helpful to me.

  • Select the thinnest black circle that was part of the original design and create an offset for it. For this portion, I entered an offset of 5mm.
  • Change the color of the new offset to your preferred color, I used purple.

Now it is time to add layers to the banner portion. The design is already layered but I prefer the offset to show a little more, so I deleted the bottom 2 layers of the design and created an offset on the top layer.

  • Click on the “offset” tab and increase the external offset. For this portion, I entered an offset of 3mm. Recolor each new offset along the process.

Here is a comparison of the original design with very small/thin offsets (bottom banner) compared to the offset I created (top banner). This is a personal preference so have fun with the options.

IMPORTANT TIP: When creating layered cake toppers, make an offset of the entire cake topper (once you place all of its pieces where they belong). This will help guide you on where to place the items when you assemble the cake topper.

  • Place the cake topper items in place (align, center, adjust sizing, etc.) and click on the “offset” tab and enter 0mm for the offset.

Great job! You have designed a layered cake topper using free designs! This will help you as a base to future cake toppers. The possibilities are endless.

  • Send all of your layers to make, below are the cut settings that have worked well with my iCraft.

** Material Type: Cardstock Paper (180g/97lb)
**Force: 7.5
**Speed: 5
**Passes: 2

Assembling the Cake Topper

  • Begin with the large offset of the entire cake topper and glue your cake topper stick to the center of the base. Make sure you leave enough of the stick on the bottom to insert into the cake. Set the base to the side.

  • Assemble each of the layers of the banner by adding craft foam in between the layers or gluing one layer on top of the other. Set the banner to the side.

Assemble the center part of the cake topper starting with the top layer.

  • Glue the top thin black ring to the purple layer.

  • Flip the purple layer over and add small foam squares to add dimension to the layer.
  • Place the purple layer on top of the white circle layer. Then flip the white layer to add foam strips to the back.

  • Place the white layer on top of the black scalloped circle. Then flip the black layer to add foam strips to the back.
  • Finally place the black scalloped circle on top of the purple scalloped circle.

REMEMBER: Align the scalloped circles so they are exactly on top of the next layer, NOT staggered.

  • Now add tall foam strips to the bottom base layer around the top area and place hot glue on the cake topper stick. Then place the layered circle on top using the base offset as a guide.

  • Place the banner on the topper using hot glue and using the base offset as a guide.

WONDERFUL!!! You have made a layered cake topper! This is only the beginning of your cake topper journey. Use your imagination and craftiness to add designs, shapes, and images to match any party theme.
