DIY Project Sharing | Drink Water, My Friend Decal

This is a fun and simple decal design made for permanent adhesive vinyl, featuring a doodle of a teapot with the phrase “Drink water, my friend”, along with a few drops and air bubbles inside, and a groovy waterline as the horizon.

The phrase is a playful nod to Bruce Lee’s famous “Be water, my friend” quote: a reminder to stay adaptable, light, and yes, hydrated! As he said:
“If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup.
If you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle.
If you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot.
Now, water can flow or it can crash.
Be water, my friend.”

I used this decal with Loklik’s black vinyl to decorate a pint glass. It turned out great, very good adhesion after applying heat with a hairdryer to finish.

However it’s already really hot where I live, and I struggled a bit to transfer the decal from the vinyl’s backing to the carrier sheet. Has anyone found a good trick for this? I’m thinking maybe chilling the vinyl briefly in the fridge could help.

Let me know your tips!

Nice design! You can always use alcohol to clean up the surface area before you put your vinyl. For sure, your vinyl will not go anywhere else. Be mindful, you need to be precise and accurate with the final placement of your design ‘coz once you place it at the spot, that’s it and it will stick like a magnet. No need to use air dryer

Love this design, reminds me of a genie lamp.

When applying your vinyl to the transfer tape make sure your burnish it down with a scrapper or even a credit card. This helps the vinyl stick to the transfer tape. The backing of the vinyl is designed to not stick to your vinyl, so rubbing it will help it transfer to the transfer tape.

To make it adhere well to your blank, make sure you clean it very well. I use rubbing alcohol and a microfiber cloth to clean the blank before applying the vinyl.

Then you burnish it down on to your blank and then slowly peel off the transfer tape. I do this going in a diagonal direction from the pattern as it helps the vinyl stick down.

After that you will want to let it cure for 24 hours for the vinyl to set and stick down well. I always advised only hand washing and don’t soak it. Also note that vinyl is not food safe so I also place designs far enough down the cup so your lips won’t touch it.

Really good guide, and good advises. I do all that, the problem is being the heat here. Next time I will try cooling it before xdd

mmmmm, that’s so strange because it gets pretty hot in summer where I live but haven’t had a problem with the vinyl sticking down.

Let me know how you go cooling it beforehand
