I leave my bonsai Christmas tree at home while I spend the holidays at the family house, but I still wanted to take a little bit of decoration with me. Nothing too complicated, because there is always a lot going on and we are not really decorating the house for Christmas. I did not want anyone to start looking for a tree or taking out old decorations, so I thought about making something more symbolic.
I needed a tree, so I thought making just a silhouette on a stand. A simple shape where I could hang some ornaments. I chose this tree from IS as it was very easy to imagine it decorated with my new friend, felt.
Here is the result. I find it very elegant and charming. I wanted everything to be easy to store, decorate and even transport, since I now have to take it with me. I used one of the small easels I always have around, covered it with felt as well and added some velcro dots so the easel can be attached and removed easily. After that, I thought it would also be a good idea to use velcro to hang the ornaments instead of making holes (more trouble). To hide the velcro, I cut small felt circles that also work as Christmas balls.
The ornaments were already made, as I had created them for my bonsai tree. The origami stars, the personalized name balls, the star topper and some fairy lights. Since the tree is red, I planned to use some white ones I’d never used before. To my surprise, only a few lights worked (broken wire), so I had to decorate it without them. I’ll leave the lighting part for my parents’ house and give my father a little task fixing the fairy lights.
It doesn’t worry me too much, because the tree is very quick to assemble and take apart. The balls were too much for such a small tree, so I will use them in a different way. The origami stars, as you can see, can be hung very easily wherever you want, and for the star topper I kept the same velcro solution.
